As part of their annual beach clean activities for Suzuki’s global Clean Ocean Project, Suzuki Marine GB has cleared 3 tonnes of marine waste from the rugged and remote coastline of the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s most southerly point.
Joined by members of the Suzuki Fishing Team, the 15-strong contingent worked together to tackle marine pollution, and in one day removed over 3 tonnes of marine waste, including microplastics, ropes, tyres and metal from several remote beaches, which may otherwise have made their way back into the local ecosystem.
The team’s first stop was Port Logan, at first glance a visually pristine beach, but once on the ground, hundreds of small plastic particles were uncovered, many of which were cotton bud sticks flushed through sewage systems and washed ashore.
The team then used the Suzuki Fishing Team boats to access Clanyard Bay, a secluded cove only accessible by boat. Here, the extent of the problem became even clearer. In a matter of hours, the team filled a full trailer load of waste, much of it old fishing gear and household plastics that had been polluting the coastline and threatening local wildlife.
Mark Beeley, Head of ATV & Marine for Suzuki GB, said, “This year’s beach clean truly showcased what can be achieved when we come together for a shared cause. The Mull of Galloway is an area of outstanding natural beauty, but also one that highlights the hidden impact of marine litter. We’re extremely proud of our team, the Suzuki Fishing Team and everyone who took part. It’s a small but vital step in our wider mission to protect the oceans we all enjoy.”
The event forms part of Suzuki’s global Clean Ocean Project, an initiative that not only includes clean-up activities, but also ground-breaking innovations such as Suzuki’s microplastic collection device for outboard motors, as well as efforts to reduce plastic packaging across its operations.
